Hi guys,
just a quick thought for you.
I have been working on some complex models in radiance &Ecotect, with a huge amount of detail in the model.
I realised it woud be very useful when modelling to have layers or sub-classes within zones. Obviously, this would have no bearing on thermal etc, but it would certainly make the model I am currently working on (15,000 surfaces in one relatively small building - imported 3ds originally with 40,000 surfaces before merging coincident triangles.) easier to navigate and control. - most importantly when it comes to assigning materials etc.
just a thought, and one that I suspect you have already considered!!
Take care.
Nickd

Hi Nickd,
I was thinking about your observation...
And I believe you can model sth similar to a sub-class or layer by using the "group" comand. Have you already tried it ?
Please apologise me if you already know this. Perhaps the sub-classes or layers you are refering to are sth much more complex.
Just a comment about your comment.

Clarice
Zones groups

Not sure if you mean groups or zone groups Clarice.
so perhaps together we may have more success convincing Andrew to do this...
Andrew has kind of tried to do a kind of Grouping for Zones, but if you ask me I don't think its very good... not very obvious or useful.
I've been hassling for a kind of zone folders option like in say, photoshop or flash etc. but he says its not possible with the current set of code...
I will be adding your name to the list of complainants now Nick
BTW. Zone Groups are those letters A to L right at the top of the Zone Management panel -- if you right click you can group select zones... not that helpful but it is something perhaps.

Its not that its not possible - its just I think that for it to be useful, a zone really has to belong to any number of folders. For example, a zone with a balcony lighting layout on it should belong to a LIGHTS group and the 3RD FLOOR group.
It relatively easy to programme this flexibility in, however I would have to change the file format in order to store it. I will do this in the future but for v5.XX I think I will just make the existing groups more obvious and better to use. That gives you 16 different groups for zones to belong to
