Whenever I create a 3d-solid model in autocad (2006), export it to 3ds and import it in Ecotect v550, the import goes alright but I get shading "anomalies". I don't understand why those "anomalies" occur.
I've attached an example where I've marked some of the "anomalies" with a red rectangle. I've noticed this strange behaviour with several different 3d-autocad-models. In some models it's a lot worse compared to the attached example. Even to the point of being unusable.
I've tried converting the solidmodel to faces and import it through a dxf-file to no avail. I tried different Autocad-versions, tried a real 3ds-model, etc. One of my collegues confirmed this behaviour and told me that it doesn't occur when the model is made in Ecotect itself.
Anybody else noticed this too? I would like to know if I can do anything to prevent these "anomalies".
TIA,
Jeff

Shading Anomalies in OpenGl
Jeff,
I have experienced the anomalies you are refering too before; while they do not happen all the time, they can be anoying.
I do not believe they are not caused by the fact that you have imported CAD model. I believe they are caused by your own machine's video card, and its ability to deal with OpenGl. For a similar model, my little laptop that has a video card sporting a small 64MB of memory will give me these anomalies, while my desktop, with a video card of 500 MB will not.
I have actually never used a model imported from Auto CAD; I almost exclusivvely build in Ecotect, and this issue still happen.
Check your video card - an update of the driver, or even a new card if that one is old - may do the trick.
Also, with this in mind, remember that the shadows in the 3D canvas will not have the same issue, so always double check between the two windows.
Best,
Olivier
Shading Anomalies in OpenGl
I have got the same problems as Jeff. I have converted a dwg-file into an 3ds-file in AutoCad. I have imported te 3ds-file in Ecotect V5.60. It looks okay and the shading in the 3d-editor is good. The shading in the visualisation is not okay at some points. I have used te model on a pc with an good graphic-card (GF 8600 GT with 512 mb). I have attached the 3ds-file which I have used in Ecotect.
